Tigers set to sport spiffy special duds provided by Nike.

Above is a view of the full Nike Pro Combat uniform Missouri will wear Saturday when it faces Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Below is the black “M”-on-anthracite helmet. The uniform is inspired by the B-2 Stealth Bomber from nearby Whiteman Air Force Base.

It’s a rare day when the equipment guy conducts a press conference, but that was the case yesterday when Don Barnes followed Coach Gary Pinkel to the lectern in a Missouri football meeting room and described the new uniforms the Tigers will wear against Kansas on Saturday.

A mannequin dressed in the new duds was wheeled into the room on a dolly, and Barnes, Missouri’s director of equipment operations, explained to reporters all the bells and whistles of the Nike Pro Combat uniforms. The biggest change from Missouri’s normal uniform is a gray helmet with a black “M” rather than the usual black helmet with a gold “M.”
Nike designers met with Barnes over the summer to brainstorm.
“What do we have in Missouri?” Barnes asked rhetorically. “The home of the B-2 bomber at Whiteman Air Force Base. They saw that and jumped on that as an inspiration for that uniform: ‘Let’s design that thing to look like a Stealth Bomber.’ ”
Barnes said the fact that gray — it’s actually described as anthracite — isn’t one of MU’s school colors wasn’t a deterrent because Stealth Bombers are gray.
Barnes said Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel signed off on the new uniforms, which will be worn only one time. The jerseys are white with black trim. The pants are black. According to a Nike press release, the new uniforms are 37 percent lighter than current models.
Nike chose Missouri, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas and TCU to wear the uniforms one time this year. Nike picked up the tab, which is more than $100,000 per team. Each player will keep everything but the helmets, which will be auctioned at mutigers.com.
“The uniform is pretty sweet,” quarterback Blaine Gabbert said. “Nike did an awesome job.”
HEAD GAMES: Missouri tailback Derrick Washington said he’s had some lingering headaches but no nausea after suffering a concussion in the first half of Saturday’s 34-24 victory over Iowa State. Trainer Rex Sharp has been monitoring his situation. Washington wasn’t sure whether he would be able to practice today.
“These concussions are nothing to play with,” Washington said. “My head’s just been hurting for a few days. ... Rex said that’s normal. I’ll leave it to him. He said I should be fine.”
Washington said this is his first — and hopefully last — concussion.
“That feeling is something you’d never want to have,” he said. “I never want to have that feeling again. I didn’t know what happened the whole first half. We were watching film, and everything was new to me.”
Pinkel said he was “very confident” Washington will play against KU.
Recent studies have linked concussions to serious long-term brain problems, including dementia, in former football players. Pinkel said that information has made coaches, doctors and trainers more cautious about when a player with a concussion should be allowed to return to the field.
“Medical staffs know more about concussions and how to deal with them and getting guys back when they’re ready and not just asking an athlete, ‘Hey, do you want to go play?’ because generally most guys will want to play,” Pinkel said.
ALEXANDER THE GREAT: Missouri wide receiver Danario Alexander made quite an impression on Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads. After Saturday’s game, Rhoads compared Alexander to Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown and world-record sprinter Usain Bolt.
“He’s got a little Jim Brown to him,” Rhoads said. “You look at him on the field, and you think he’s done and not going to be able to play this play very fast, and then he comes out of the blocks like the Olympic guy from Jamaica.”
Alexander, who has 1,411 yards and 12 touchdowns this year, was amused by the over-the-top praise.
“Jim Brown, he was a monster. I can’t be compared to him,” Alexander said. “That’s pretty funny. I’ve never heard anything like that.”
AT A LOSS TO EXPLAIN IT: Missouri’s kickoff and kickoff-return teams both rank last in the Big 12 in conference games. The Tigers average 18.7 yards per return — which seems especially paltry because Jeremy Maclin averaged 24 yards last year. Pinkel considers the kickoff coverage team, which has allowed Big 12 opponents an average starting point of their own 32-yard line, to be the bigger problem.
“Even if you stop them and you punt, what happens is the field position is going to switch,” he said. “Based on one kickoff, you can get in a rut for a whole quarter. So it’s a huge issue.”
With the exception of the Colorado game, when he was suspended, Tanner Mills has handled the kickoff duties. The last two weeks, he’s mostly been asked to deliver pooch or squib kicks. Against Kansas State, that strategy prevented star returner Brandon Banks from breaking off a touchdown return, but it also routinely allowed the Wildcats to start drives on their own 40.
“He’s done certainly an adequate job,” Pinkel said of Mills. “If he could kick it in the end zone every time, it would help. … We were getting a few more in the end zone than we are now. Obviously, it’s a coaching issue, because we’re not getting it done. We’re not covering it good enough. Some of the kicks have been fine, and some haven’t been.”
The silver lining this week is Kansas is almost as bad in both categories. The Jayhawks rank 10th in the Big 12 in kick coverage and seventh in kickoff returns.
FUN POLICE: Pinkel said he had never seen a play like the one Iowa State used to score its final touchdown on Saturday — a lateral to right tackle Scott Haughton — and hopes to never see one again. He compared it to the Fumblerooski play in which the quarterback leaves the ball on the ground and carries out a fake while an offensive lineman picks up the ball and runs with it.
That play was most famously run by Nebraska in the 1984 Orange Bowl, but in 1992 the NCAA banned any play that uses an intentional fumble. ISU’s play didn’t involve a fumble.
“It’s a great play, and they deserve it, but when I look at that, I think it’s like the old Fumblerooski and some of those really trick-type plays that the rules committee should really look at and evaluate a little bit,” Pinkel said. “That’s my opinion. We’re going to submit it. They won’t listen to me — I know that. If Mack Brown does it, they might listen to him.”
THE PEANUT GALLERY: Pinkel has had a run of success with walk-on kickers. For three years, Jeff Wolfert was automatic, and this year Grant Ressel is 20 for 21 on field goals and 35 for 35 on extra points.
Pinkel admits he has lucked into two great kickers, but he said Missouri does one unusual thing in practice to prepare kickers for pressure. At random times in practice, Ressel has to kick field goals while teammates and coaches try to distract him.
“We yell Grant’s name. It’s not like real life, actually, because we’re right in his face talking, throwing our hands up and everything,” Washington said. “He knocks them down, so I know he’s focused.”

Are they REALLY thinking of changing the helmets, too? Its not clear if this is just a one-time thing or a trial balloon, but I fear the worst.
Sorry, but these uniforms are ugly and inappropriate. WHY would we want to look like an Air Force bomber? Are we looking for funding from the DOD? We're the TIGERS, remember? Tigers ... black & gold ... get it, guys?
Changing the uniforms every few years is bad enough for the visual identity of the university/team (see USC, Oklahoma, Alabama, Nebraska, Notre Dame etc for established programs that don't need to change uni's on a whim ... and are proud to have their uniforms represent program continuity). We've already changed our look 3-4 times over the last 20 yrs, but at least the helmets have stayed with the gold classic M with the stripes over top.
If they change the helmets, I'll lose all respect for Pinkel's (or the entire athletic dept's) ability to understand how much continuity with Mizzou's tradition means to alums. Gee, while you're at it, why not have M&M write us different fight song & Alma Mater? Or rip out the white M & put in near-field parking ...
The Beakers are gonna have a field day with this one. No class, Gary, no class at all. Stupid time to do it, too, against KU, our most traditional game/rival. Gary, you're tone deaf on many fronts.

It's a one time thing and if teams like the uniforms then Nike will make them to the teams color specs.. This is a great promo tool for the football team. Young recruits these days want to see these types of things and look at the teams that Mizzou is being lumped in with, some nice company! Not sure what the big deal is, the uniform doesn't make the man, it's what is underneath that counts.

Yep, understand about the 'one time' thing ... but being at a university & knowing how the admins often work, I'd be really surprised if someone wasn't using this as a trial balloon. Lots of $$ at Nike that the athletic dept folks would like to tap into.
But, point well taken regarding 'if we like them they'll design' to suit. Hope its that simple. I just fear that admin's with no loyalty to Mizzou but a paycheck are looking for a way to pad their vita(s). Think Jack Lingyel (sp?), etc.

MU's colors are black and gold, period. Could we please let Nike's graphic designers play around with some other team the next time they get a fit of inspiration????
If MU wants to bring out a new uniform, they should follow the NFL's lead and kick out a throwback. Same end result - new unis to sell to fans - while actually honoring the school and team's tradition instead of looking like an Under Armour commercial.

pepsis -
Get a clue. These are a one time thing.
This is an honor for the Football Program. Do you know who the other teams who participated in this are? NO? I didn't think so. They were: Mizzou, Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Virginia Tech, LSU, and TCU.
Nike is previewing a new Uniform design. By design, I mean the pants are more light weight, more breathable. As is the Jersey. They are debuting a new base layer. One that helps protect the players more.
Next... the players love them. absolutely freaking love them. As will big time recruits who see Missouri playing on TV. I doubt you're one of the people who need to be impressed by these uniforms.
You also probably don't think we can win without a fullback, or you think that the new video board is a "monstrosity", and that it takes away from the game experience. It's sad really.
Then.... you think this was Gary Pinkel's decision? Really? Are you that naive? Do some homework before posting next time.
Lastly: the only thing the beakers are gonna be is jealous. The beakers are running out on the field with their Winner's Choice and Alway's Save brand uniforms, and we run out there with premium Nike digs.

As an alumnus and former player I am embarrassed by the uniforms that will be worn this week. The gold jerseys last year were bad enough, but now we appear to be trying to become the Oregon of the midwest!

My .02 cents worth:
Do whatever you want with new uniforms, just as long as they're black & old gold (not that ugly bright yellow) and they keep the helmets unchanged. Actually, throwback unis would be cool; I vote for the 1978 version.

I believe in the Penn State policy when it comes to uniforms: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. My favorite Mizzou uni is the 97 style, but to each his/her own. If the school's going to go throwback, I'd vote for the 1941 unis. These new ones aren't for me.
Ummm... not to hijack, but to all those who were calling for Coach Pinkel's head for whatever reason just two weeks ago... our team is two wins (Kansas and the bowl game) away from equaling last year's record of 9-4. Sky falling much, Chicken Little?

The promo uniforms look great for a one-time special use. Props to the athletic department for continuing to work with Nike to get Mizzou's name out there with the traditional powers of college football. I especially like that the uniform was inspired by something Missourian (the B-2). It's a nice tribute to a valuable resource in our state.
The Beast Mode ad that accompanies the uniform is awesome.

Guys...this...is...a...one...time...deal. Who cares what our colors our, it's one game...and our colors aer gonna be there! there is gold...there is black...am i missing something? some of you really need to think before posting your opinion on something like this. it's one game!!! and yes, they wanted to make it look like the stealth bomber...missouri tigers, named after a local militia group during the civil war. our r.o.t.c fire's a cannon after every td. so a military tie-in isn't a going to far. So...now then...take this for what it is. The NCAA and Nike putting a spot light on our program...great for us as fans, as a team, and for recruits.

We are surrounded by idiots I see.....
It really doesn't matter if WE like the uniforms. We are not wearing them. We are not MU football players or coaches. Our say on the matter means nothing.
The only people who need to like the new diggs are the players, coaches & new recruits.
From what I have heard our boys went nutz ("screaming like a bunch of girls") when they got a chance to see the diggs with their own two eyes and thats all that matters to me.

Our QB has been looking for Black and Gold helmets downfield for years. Don't think that this "benefit" to Missouri won't have an adverse effect on his ability to spot our receivers in the open. Christ, Pinkel will do anything for attention, like extending the Arrowhead deal to benefit everyone but the local economy and season ticket holders here in Columbia. Nike was going to make a special hat for Pinkel, too, but couldn't make one big enough for his ego.

I saw these Nike Pro Combat uniforms on several of the teams that played last week and they looked awesome! Very sharp and attention grabbing on the field. I think it's great publicity for the Tigers that Nike chose them to test their new light-weight uniforms. That's really what this is about, developing a more comfortable uniform for the players. But I think the Tigers design looks lethal! Watch out beakers, we're gonna BOMB you this weekend!

Pawn,
get a clue. Do you realize Mike Alden extends that contract, not Pinkel?
I'm sure you also don't realize that Columbia's local economy stands to make as much money against Bowling Green as they do against the jayhawks. (it's in the numbers, do some research)
There is no way you have a leg to stand on trying to say this game in KC is a negative thign for anyone associated with Mizzou football, nor are these uniforms. Positive attention coming our way...never a bad thing.

Once again, these uni's are a one time thing, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that these are supposed to be auctioned off for charity after the game. No one commenting has any real information on who is making money from this situation, so why are you commenting on a topic that you are ignorant on. What we do know is that at least one good thing is coming from these uniforms, money is going to charity.

As a long time Mizzou fan, I am so excited that we were given the opportunity to wear the uniforms, especially in a high profile game. I was wondering if we would get the uniforms just ten years ago...1999? It says alot about the change of perception in our program. I can also remember 10 years ago when it was difficult to see many Mizzou football games on my 30" tube television without Hi-Def!! Times change, and there are alot more pluses (recruiting for one), than minuses.

The game has been over for a few days ... who likes the "new" uniforms now? ;-)
I certainly liked the anthracite (never call it "gray") base color on the helmet ... really did a great job pulling off the B-2 and stealth themes. I wouldn't even mind keeping some of that color under the traditional old gold and black ...
