CAN WE BE FRIENDS?

Missourians, Nebraskans have at least two things in common.

A Nebraska fan in hostile territory shows his disappointment during the second half of Missouri’s 41-6 victory over the Cornhuskers on Oct. 6, 2007.

In the last few weeks I’ve received a handful of concerned e-mails from Nebraska residents, urging me to remind Tribune readers to treat visiting fans with respect tomorrow when the Tigers and Cornhuskers meet on Faurot Field. These e-mailers overestimate my influence — not to mention the literacy of fans prone to hurling insults at Big Red grandmas — but I will do my best to diffuse the hostility.

Missouri fan Jonathan Boehm makes a “loser” hand signal to Nebraska fans as his grandson, Joshua, looks on before the teams’ last meeting in Columbia on Oct. 6, 2007.

THURSDAY

(21) Nebraska at (24) Missouri, 8 p.m. (ESPN)

FAN INFORMATION

● Parking lots will open at 4:30 p.m.

● Stadium gates will open at 6:30 p.m.

● Country music star Sara Evans will sing the national anthem at 7:45 p.m.

Although Missouri fans reserve the hardest place in their hearts for the Kansas Jayhawks, the Cornhuskers have unquestionably become Public Enemy No. 2. After losing 24 straight times to Nebraska, the Tigers have won four of the last six meetings. This “Revenge of the Nerds” scenario has caused emotions about the opposing school to bubble to the surface like repressed memories of swirlies in the junior high locker room.

The list of grievances is long.

From Nebraska’s perspective, Missouri fans have the bad manners of college football’s nouveau riche. They do not politely clap for the opposing team as it jogs off the field, and instead offer quite a different assortment of hand gestures. They consider two straight Big 12 North titles — neither of them outright titles, mind you, and earned in the final year and immediate aftermath of the unfortunate period known as the Bill Callahan era — as evidence of a shift in the college football power structure established over the course of decades. They cannot be true fans if they have never bought a scalped ticket to a spring game.

Fair points. Now, for the rebuttal.

From Missouri’s perspective, Nebraska fans politely clap for the opposing team as it jogs off the field for the sole purpose of reminding you that they politely clap for the opposing team as it jogs off the field. They pine for 1994 more wistfully than Ace of Base and fail to mention that in the last five years, their team’s Big 12 record is worse than Texas Tech and Missouri and only a game better than Kansas. They write hysterical e-mails to sports editors about how they fear for their lives in Columbia even though the only reported violence at one of these games came when one of their student-athletes, Kellen Huston, slugged a Missouri fan in 2003. We gave them Mike Rucker; they gave us Lawrence Phillips.

Whew, don’t you all feel better getting that off your chests? Now, let me remind you of all the things Nebraskans and Missourians have in common.

1. Both fixate on college football because their states currently do not have professional football franchises.

2. Both find Iowa a little dull.

There, I’ve done my duty. Embrace your differences and similarities, be good to each other and enjoy the game.

Its interesting that Cornhusker fans were emailing the Tribune when just yesterday, some of their own were posting some of the most hateful and stupid remarks I can imagine. One of the posters even said he would key cars and slash tires of Missouri fans when we go to Lincoln next year. I have been treated well by fans from other Big 12 schools (not Kansas). It would be good for Missouri fans to be more respectful to other fans, after all it is just a game.

To be fair to all fans, it's difficult to generalize an entire fan base. However, I have had the worst (repeatedly) game day experiences in #1 Boulder, #2 Lawrence, and #3 Columbia. I have had my car keyed in Boulder, a rear tire slashed in Lawrence, and experienced a statistically significant number of overly rude and obnoxious Tiger fans pre and (especially) post game. I've been to ten other very good college football venues (Big 12 and Big 10) and had great experiences at each, in addition to a bowl game and Big 12 championship game. I consider those trips as considerable benchmarks to measure my bad experiences against. Thus, let me just state that a large majority of each fan base from these aforementioned three Big 12 North teams have some catching up to do in understanding what being a true college football fan is all about. Like so many other programs, there is absolutely no question that Nebraska has an excellent, knowledgeable fan base. Many of the posters here make us sound pretentious, but in reality, it's called being civil and appreciating a good hard battle fought on the field by young college men.

Opinions vary I guess. Last time I was in Columbia I had a great time. One thing to keep in mind is that there are plenty of idiots to go around at each and every venue. Every school I've been to could use "a little more class" regarding appropriate fan behavior. The one thing I bet we can all agree on is that it isn't getting better. Which is too bad. It's a lot of fun to go to an away game and hang out an tailgate with their fans.

Courteous and mutual respect go a long way.

October 7, 2009 at 4:39 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

Scott says...

Who really cares if you have a good experience in Columbia or not? We don't really want you here. Your vacation dollars aren't tantamount to the local economy. Columbia's gameday economy hinges largely on how many football games Mizzou wins, not how many football fans Nebraska brings with it every two years. If a hostile environment makes it easier for Mizzou to win, then I'm all about the hostility. Is it juvenile? Childish? Absolutely.

But so is throwing your headset after the other team scores the go-ahead TD with 15 seconds left. Some would call that passion.

On a side note, I had a wonderful experience in Lincoln last year and it had everything to do with my team winning the game. Your fans' performance was actually quite embarrassing. You were too polite. I had many college-aged kids and other adults come up to me and congratulate me on how awesome Mizzou is/was. Have a little self-respect, people! Give me some crap about how Mizzou hasn't won a national title or hasn't won a conference championship since 1969. Give me something!

I have always enjoyed the Missouri games because win or lose they are fun to watch. I go back to the 60s when Missouri with Dan Devine beat Nebraska two years running. Some people wanted to fire Bob Devaney over those losses.

Nebraska fans (Generally) believe in showing visiting teams a good time. We know we are going to their place the next year. As far as the comment about NU fans giving polite applause, I think you can go back to the early 90s when the university of Washington came into Husker stadium and beat Nebraska soundly. They received a standing ovation on their way out of the stadium. We would prefer a rivalry like Oklahoma. We pull for Oklahoma against anyone except Nebraska. We want them to be undefeated when we beat them. Or they beat us, does not sting quite as much. Same here with Missouri, undefeated. Win or lose a great game.

I went to the game in 2001 back in the college days to Mizzou and had a great time. Spent the evening before at a multitude of bars and spoke with lots of Mizzou locals who seemed to treat me pretty well so I cannot comment on what opposing fans (Huskers) recieve presently. I do hope to return someday (maybe go to Harpos if it is still open), and hopefully what has been said about Mizzou fan is a stereotype perpetuated from a few obnoxious few. I am a season ticket holder at NU and I can tell you that I see some people sporting red stumbling around the stadium before the game that I would not want opposing fans to classify as typical husker fan (it takes all kinds to fill a stadium).

I am anxious for the game tomorrow, and hopeful the days of getting worked by Smith/Daniels and Co. are over, but until we cross the hump, I have no problem saying that we have slipped below you over the last 4 years (scoreboard)... I will wait until the next 5 have passed before I can say that you have a better program...

Here's to my next trip to Mizzou in 2012, hopefully it is as good as the last one so I don't have to change my story on Columbia. Most Husker fans will drink a Natty, so share one!

Wow, that is a pretty sharp bunch down there in Missoureh - can't even pick up on an obvious slam on the Chiefs and Lambs.

Mizzou fans are in general pretty poorly behaved. It stems from having no real love for their own team, but rather an intense and bitter disdain for their rivals.

Sadly, their reputation precedes them.

As for Scott's post, how often do you guys sell out your stadium? Starting tomorrow you'll have a record of 1 in row. Maybe you guys should stop with the 'L' loser signs and show your kids how adults are suppose to act towards each other regardless of scenario.

I'll simply reiterate the point that your presence at Memorial Stadium does my team, the Tigers, absolutely no good. Crowd noise and crowd intensity can absolutely have a world of an effect on a football game. Look at home team records over the last 50 years. If Memorial Stadium holds 70,000 people and 20,000 of them are Nebraska fans, well, then where's the homefield advantage in that? That's my point.

Am I advocating soccer hooliganism? Obviously not. But rolling out the proverbial red carpet for opposing fans is pretty silly as well, in my opinion.

I don't care about being praised for treating other college fans well in Lincoln.
All I suggest is that Missouri fans practice a bit of class. Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, Kansas, etc treat their visitors well. And it has little to do with recent win/loss records. While I enjoyed your column, I still end the read with the inescapable truth that Missouri fans tend to lack class. Perhaps, when the Missouri football team actually wins a conference title, this will change.

October 7, 2009 at 5:24 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

NUwillShowU says...

See Scott, you just really don't get it, do you. Following your team to away games is a good time. There is more to it than just the game. It is alot of fun to mingle with the other fans and shoot the breeze over a few cocktails. Most civil and decent fan bases understand that before and after the game you can be respectful to others. Again, I wouldn't expect much from you as a Mizzou fan, so it really comes as no surprise.

I don't blame the Mizzou fans for the taunting, insults, and such - it comes with the unfamiliarity of actually having a respectable team and winning a game or two - you just don't really know what to do or how to act, so you end up showing your true colors. I am not just saying this as a NU fan, but a fan in general.

The dang thing about it is that a Missouri road trip could be an excellent experience, win or lose, because Columbia is a beatiful town and has a lot of cool hang out spots. It is just too bad that having to deal with its Jacka$$ fans puts a damper on an otherwise great trip...it is almost as if you don't have enough decency and humility to realize what you've got there. It has to suck to be you.

I've lived in Columbia for 20+ years and have found it to be a town with a lot of good people. I've also been to Lincoln, met the coach, toured the facilities and found those working there to be nice as well.

I'm hoping for a fun, competitive game and a Mizzou win with no kicking of the football in the endzone, Huskers. And if Husker fans want to be scared at a football game, visit a port-a-pottie in the parking lot of Oakland Coliseum wearing a Chiefs jersey.

OMAHUSKER says...

Scott, I will stick with my guns, the majority of the time, the better team is going to win... Do you think that crowd noise had anything to do with Mizzou beating Nebraska the last 3 times at home? I would attribute those victories to you having a better team. Also, all the crowd noise in the world did Nebraska little last year at home, you had the better team, hands down. The victories in Nebraska's streak, were they all because Nebraskan's could yell and heckle louder in the 70's, 80's, and 90's? I also contend that you can be just as loud (probably louder) when cheering for your team than trying to think of creative corn/jayhawk expletives to yell at opposing fans. I would hope that as Missouri continues to realize it's potential and continues to become/remain a power in the Big 12 North you will take some time to follow them on the road and see what other stadiums and cities have to offer (which it sounds like you do) and not expect to get verbally assualted in return.

I had a great time in Mizzou last time I was there, but you are not doing anything to dispell what is being preached by others who have recently visited. And to give you some perspective, I am pretty open minded, I am a 30 year old (not a blue hair husker elitist that does no wrong) that likes to tailgate and have fun before the game, and some of the best conversations over beers have been with visitors. Do I get mad and angry when we lose, sure, but I would never imagine that treating another person poorly would make me feel better... Same with winning, I like to see Nebraska win more than anything, but heckling people about the outcome of the game doesn't make me feel any better. It's like belittleing an opposing fan makes me an active participant in the victory. In the end, I am just a fan.

I'm sick to death of these whiners from the "corn cob" (my name for Nebraska) state. I grew through my middle age listening to that self-righteous holier than thou Tom Osborne and how great they were. So what did he engender? Well it seems that it's OK to cheat (kicking a ball to keep it from hitting the ground during a pass so that it will be caught by your teammate is illegal) and dear old Tom seemed to rejoice in finding every thug and bully to play for him (the Peters brothers and Mr. Lawrence are good examples). I know that when John Matuzak was here at Mizzou and beat up someone much smaller than himself he was cashiered, and that's how it should be. Some of these Husker fans either don't get it, or REFUSE to get, that coming to OUR site and telling us how great their fans are, and how horrible our fans are is tragically ironic. It's not only arrogant, but galatically stupid and counterproductive.

It's just another way for them to cathartically, I suppose, excercise their NU football-demons. The same fans keep beating the same worn-out drum. So, in essence, NU is not only superior to MU on the gridiron, but in the stands as well?

Ok Husker fans, we get it, you're better than us. That's fine. However, the rest of the country, including us poor, unfortunate Tiger fans, may beg to differ with you on this matter.

I have gone to Lincoln the last two years when MU played Nebraska and let me say that most of the Husker fans were nice. There were a@##oles that were annoying but the thing that I was most struck by is how bad of a loser they were. At MU, win, lose, or draw you are going to have a good time; if not you are hanging around the wrong people. I have never seen a more pathetic group of sorry sacks in my life. Excuses and smack talking were flying like crazy from the Bugeaters. Just a bunch of pouters. Also Nebraska fans you should never scream at a Mizzou game about getting "homered at home" by the officials (yeah that holds true for you too Colorado). If you get your butt handed to you go out and have a good time anyway don't pout. I promise if MU wins this game we will party to celebrate; if we lose we will party to drown our sorrows.

I say Husker fans come on down to CoMo, spend your money, grow a thicker skin, hike up your skirts, quit acting like this is a golf or tennis game and try to have a good time. Also, I agree that if you stay away because we are too boorish and you can't handle it; great, more seats for the football fans!

I'm a Nebraska native and fan, but went to college at Northwest Missouri State, which is about two hours to a) Kansas City b) Omaha c) anything approaching civilization in Iowa. In my years there, I went to the NU-Mizzou game in 2003 in Columbia when Missouri finally snapped the loss streak. I spent all day tailgating with confident, half-joking, but altogether fun Mizzou fans. Plenty of jibes back and forth in the rain during the game. Afterwards, it was more of the same, but the joking seemed to be more a sigh of relief than meant in poor spirit. Even at Harpo's, where the goal post ended up, I thought the vibe was good. I was with a group of Mizzou fans and Husker fans, and all but one of us had a great time. That was the Husker fan that had to spew stats and defend his honor...and got taunted all night long by plenty of Missouri jerks. Now, I'm as passionate and knowledgeable about my team as anyone else, but at the end of the day I won't let a loss ruin the atmosphere around me. And those of us...Mizzou and NU fans aplenty, far outnumber the nasty fans.

I am glad to have a potential rivalry in Missouri and hope to one day get back to Columbia some time again. I just hope Mizzou doesn't go all K-State in the process. A few good years does not a quality program make. Hey-o!

Here's the problem with Nebraska fans. They're arrogant whiners with a double standard. You need not look any further than the posts they've left here to see why they don't get the hugs they crave from Missouri fans. They're completely disrespectful and obnoxious towards any fan of a team that they feel is threat to their dominance in the Big 12 north.

One can look at any Mizzou, Colorado, Oklahoma, or Virginia Tech forum on the internet and find it absolutely littered with nasty and antagonistic remarks left by Nebraska fans. They want to be treated with respect but they don't give it and that's where the problem lies.

These self proclaimed "classiest fans" are the same ones that make videos about boogers and fabricate fake news stories about rival quarterbacks being arrested for drugs. They've got a story about some fan throwing batteries at them for every one of their rivals. I've seen it told on Colorado boards, Oklahoma boards, and Missouri boards. They just insert a new name for the story. They do all of these things and then have the audacity to demand respect. They need to remove the word classiest and insert the word stupidest if they believe they can continue acting with such foolishness and believe that fans of other teams will just turn the other cheek.

Personally, I have seen enough of their ridiculous antics to last a lifetime and believe that whatever kind of nastiness they might encounter in Columbia will still be far less than what they deserve. If they don't like the fact that we don't roll out the red carpet for them, and treat them like they royalty that they believe they are, they need to quit sniveling and just stay at home. The game will be televised.

Bottom line is MIZZOU has been taken us to the woodshed for the last few years and it is time that we Nebraska fans give Mizzou and their fans credit. Hey, its not 1999 anymore, it hasnt been 30 years since Mizzou beat us, they have been owning us lately, even in our own house last year! So I think it's time for all the Husker fans out there to finally recognize Mizzou for what they have accomplished and stop thinking of them and their fans like second class citizens. So some people were flipped off, some tires were slashed, same thing can be said anywhere. Mizzou fans are football fans too, they arent all neanderthals. (Just like all NU fans arent over the age of 65!) I hope this can become a rivalry of respect, like NU has with Oklahoma. Mizzou has it going on down there, we are apparently on the right track to get back to where we should be. This is going to be an awesome game and win or lose and i hope everyone can enjoy it for what it is.

Oh, this is rich! Mizzou fans call Nebraska fans pompous for calling them out on their uncouth behavior, while Nebraska fans react like offended blue-hairs.

Let's face it, folks. Mizzou fans aren't as bad as CU fans, but they're far worse than A&M fans. Where does that leave us? For me, it was hit by a few globs of spit from the student section in 1997 and laughing as dozens of disruptive students were escorted from the stadium in 1999. All in good fun though, as we got to bag a few of Mizzou's finest femmes after the game. I had a good time down there, but I can certainly see why there are a lot of fans who are a bit frightened by the crowd. I thought we might get killed leaving the stadium in 1997.

Whoever talked about Raiders fans, though, has it right. Faurot Field is nothing compared to the Oakland Coliseum.

All in all, I think everyone needs to get over it. Mizzou fans: you're jackasses. Own it. Nebraska fans: you're a bit pompous. Own it. After the game, try to trade some DNA.

w00lyb00ger says...

No Sacramento you have it wrong. You have it wrong because pompous is just the tip of the iceberg. You're hypocrites because you call other people out for their supposedly bad behavior while your fans act like total jerks. There's a double standard there. We're supposed to be nice while your lot acts like a bunch of crude idiots.

If Nebraska fans want to be treated respect they need to try this out. Treat fans of other schools the way you want to be treated and fix your own "uncouth behavior" before you start calling others out for theirs. You would be amazed at how well that works.

I've been to several games in Columbia and have never seen once incident between Tiger fans and that of supporters of visiting teams. I've also heard and read numerous compliments given to our fanbase by many of the people that have visited to support our opponent. Many have said they were astounded at the hospitality shown to them by Missouri fans. The only time I ever hear anything to the contrary is from Nebraska fans and a few Kansas fans. So, if you've been treated badly, that tells me that there must be something different about your behavior that brings about a negative reaction from Tiger fans. Hmmm. Maybe that's something you need to think about.

I saw a comment from one of the previous posters about being razzed by Missouri fans while having a young child with them. That's peculiar because, like the battery throwing, tires slashing, and car keying stories, I have seen Nebraska fans hurl that same accusation at fans of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Kansas fans. That tells me that it's either (A) a big fat lie told by Husker fans lashing out after an ugly loss or (B) a trend that should send up red flags that maybe they're doing something wrong because they sure are bringing out the worst in people everywhere they go.

I'm trying to figure out how Nebraska fans treat opposing fans and teams like jerks, therefore making us hypocrites. I can see all the anecdotal evidence from Mizzou fans talking about how they've been cursed out, spit upon, and hit with objects from the stands while in Lincoln on this board. Oh wait, no I don't. The chief complaint is that Nebraska fans are nice and complain when you aren't as nice as they are. Wow, the Nebraska fan base's hypocrisy knows no bounds.

As far as other anecdotes being portrayed as false because there are similar stories - what, similar incidents can't happen to multiple people in multiple locations? I know that my experiences with Mizzou came while standing on the field in an official capacity and my back was turned to the student section, which is ridiculously close to the opponent's bench. I'm sure I did something to provoke them, like wearing red, so I'm sure I deserved to have saliva strewn on my head, shoulders, and back, just like you allude to in your post. Or, maybe, just maybe, some 18-22 year old drunk college kids did something stupid. I know, it's shocking to think that at a night game that some drunk college kids might do something stupid, but it's been known to happen.

All that being said, I did note that Nebraska fans can be pompous. Hell, you'd be pompous, too, if the worst season you had to endure in almost 50 years was one game from being a .500 season. Why don't you have a seat in the tub and try to wash that sand out of your hoo-hah while the adults are talking? Come on back when you've won a Big 12 North title outright, let alone the Big 12 title or a national title.

Sincerely,

A Pompous Nebraska fan

Quit whining Husker fans, we need to be understanding of our less fortunate brethren from the south. We need to realize their angst toward us is driven by being beaten down for three decades of football - even though they have had a short glimmer of prosperity the past few years, it doesn't make up for playing second fiddle for so very long. No need to mention their supposed recent "great" seasons have somehow a direct correlation to our worst years as a program, I would imagine they would chalk that up to merely coincidence. Let's also be understanding of the frustration they must feel knowing they have forever been consistent underachievers who never have been able to tap their potential and make something of themselves. Let's be honest, even know the scoreboard has been in their favor of late, Missouri fans still suffer from an inferiority complex. They know we are better than they are, we know we are better than they are, and history has proven as much to be true. If we were in their shoes, wouldn't we also be a bunch of miserable classless clowns ? It has to be a difficult burden to bear, I personally cannot imagine the agony.

.
Boulder is the worst, and Columbia is a close second. A&M, the most fun I've had outside of Lincoln.

If you guys really think being a prick so fans from other schools won't come to you stadium gives you a much needed edge, then by all means, carry on. If you think that the only way you can be successful is to have your stadium to yourselves, no problem. Glad to oblige.

Thing is, you say we're pompous? Funny. You should read the article that the play-by-play guy from ULL wrote after their game in Lincoln. They got beat 55-0, but not only enjoyed the experience, but this radio guy advised fans in Louisiana to go to a game in Lincoln if they ever had the chance. 18 years covering ULL and having traveled to some of the best venues in the game, and he gave Nebraska his highest praise.

Nobody is EVER going to write an article like that about Farout Field in Columbia.

Maybe w00lyb00ger, the reason you only hear complaints from Kansas and Nebraska fans is that guys like you are just bigger jerks when those two teams come to town.

Or, for that matter, based on the few rude comments made on this site (probably from someone sulking about their own un-worthiness). There are a ton of these types roaming our streets everyday (may be a little less drunk during the week) that have no respect for themselves, much less any ability to have respect for anyone else.

If you look for them, you’ll find them. Sometimes, unwarranted, they find you.

A few scattered thoughts---I am pretty amused by the comments today- especially the good natured jabs from the Nebraskonians. Years ago as I, along with many thousands of crushed MU fans filing out of the stadium after the kicked-ball game against NU, heard a completely obnoxious MU fan totally berating a husband/wife couple wearing red. He was cussing them up and down and everyone noticed because everyone else (Nebraska fans included) were moving in silence to their cars. This Mizzou fan was so over-the-top crass and rude and all of us in our group just kept our heads down embarrassed by him. Then the worst part happened-- I heard the same crass Mizzou guy shout, "jackie!!! what the he** are you up to man???" Ugh. It turns out it was my fraternity brother from the decade before. The whole crowd looked at me as if to say "you are responsible for this idiot and make him calm down". Which I did. I learned a good lesson about sporting behavior that day. But I would take exception to any NU fan saying they are somehow immune to the same idiocy in their ranks. It applies to every single fan base in the world. That said, Nebraska fans always seem to be the friendliest visitors at Harpo's on game day (at least in my experience). The ones who travel to away games are the true fans who keep things light and positive.

Besides- I simply can't bring myself to get too upset at any college program not called KU which is the only NCAA school with a sporting mascot named for a group of men who were rapists. Talk about classy.

HuskerMike616 says...

I do not generalize the fans of any specific team as 'bad fans'. There are horrible fans on all sides of the college football spectrum. I have seen horrible fans in Boulder, in Columbia, and in Lincoln. Yes, Lincoln. I am Husker fan, but I recognize that we have bad apples among our fan base as well. Husker fans call themselves the best fans in college football, because that is what we believe. We do not believe it to act like we are the best and everybody else is the worst. We believe it because for a long, long time it was true. Not so much anymore. The Husker fan base has acquired some horrible fans in recent years that have made game day experiences in Lincoln less than thrilling. One specific example is from this year during the Arkansas State game. I was sitting behind a girl with the filthiest mouth I have ever heard. She was a Husker fan, and she was degrading the other team with swear words and obscene comments about her own private parts. There were really no Arkansas State fans around us, so I do not know who she was yelling to because they obviously could not hear her on the field. There were many small children around, which made the parents of the children very upset. Finally, some of us spoke up and told her that we were trying to watch a football game and that she would have to stop acting like an idiot. She and her tool of a boyfriend left about 5 minutes later during the second quarter.

My point is that horrible fans are noticeable everywhere you go. There will be obscene fans rooting for and against your team. Some schools have more than others (Colorado), however it does not mean the whole fan base is at that level.

Also, there is nothing wrong with banter back and forth between opposing teams. It makes things fun. However, banter does not include obscene remarks, obscene gestures, and violence. When banter starts becoming obscene is when college football becomes pointless to attend.
