Soggy fade to black
Shutout vanishes, Huskers then roll on dank Thursday.

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert reaches for his right ankle as the rain falls around him after being sacked and losing a fumble in the first half of the Tigers’ 27-12 loss to Nebraska Thursday night at Memorial Stadium. MU was up 12-0 through three quarters before the Huskers rallied for the win.

Scenes from Missouri's loss to Nebraska
It was a soggy night for football at Faurot Field where Missouri falls to Nebraska 27-12 in front of 65,826 fans.
And it left the soggy and soon-to-be unranked Missouri Tigers stunned, staggered and overwhelmed by the red tide that emerged, seemingly out of nowhere.
“I’m still in shock, man,” said Missouri nose tackle Jaron Baston, trying to make sense of his team’s 27-12 loss to 21st-ranked Nebraska, an outcome that seemed unfathomable through three quarters of play. “I can’t believe that just happened.”
“Total shock,” MU linebacker Sean Weatherspoon added. “You go out there and put together three good quarters of football, then all of a sudden it goes downhill. It’s kind of hard to believe.”
Riding a three-game losing streak in Columbia, the Cornhuskers (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) vaporized a 12-0 deficit through three quarters, a lead that once seemed insurmountable considering the game’s drenched conditions and the Huskers’ nonexistent offense. The Tigers were coasting to their third straight victory over Nebraska, something they hadn’t done since 1969.
“We were on cloud nine,” Missouri linebacker Andrew Gachkar said. “But we call it the human element. You look at the scoreboard, and you’re thinking, ‘We’ve got this game in the bag.’ Obviously, we made mistakes.”
In front of an announced crowd of 65,826, mostly wearing rain-soaked ponchos, the Tigers’ fourth-quarter meltdown made all the difference.
In a game that began with a power outage that turned out the lights on parts of MU’s campus and turned Memorial Stadium’s sparkling new videoboard into a $3.8 million blank screen, No. 24 Missouri (4-1, 0-1) put on a fourth-quarter clinic on blowing a lead. Its offense became just as lifeless as the muted board behind the north end zone. Two Blaine Gabbert interceptions led directly to Nebraska touchdown passes, while MU’s last of eight costly penalties doomed a last-gasp offensive series.
“It was going our way,” Baston said. “In the fourth quarter, it was happening so fast. You blink, and it’s like, ‘Man, they just scored a long touchdown.’ You blink again, ‘Wow, it’s a turnover.’ You blink again, and, ‘Wow, they got another touchdown.’ ”
Having scored points on a first-half safety and Gabbert’s 1-yard touchdown plunge on fourth-and-goal just seconds before halftime, Missouri’s collapse started on the third play of the fourth quarter. Trailing 12-0 and unable to generate any offense, Huskers quarterback Zac Lee unloaded a 56-yard touchdown pass to Niles Paul on third-and-8. On the play, Paul streaked down the MU sideline, cruising past cornerback Robert Steeples with both safeties, Jasper Simmons and Jarrell Harrison, nowhere to be found.
Before that pass, Lee had completed only 11 of 29 passes for 81 yards.
“We were doing a great job getting pressure and getting takeaways and being physical,” Weatherspoon said. “All of a sudden, one big play.”
But the Tigers still had the lead. Hobbling on a twisted right ankle he suffered on a first-quarter sack-and-strip by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Gabbert was struggling to connect with receivers downfield and lived dangerously with several tipped passes around the line of scrimmage. On MU’s first snap of its next series, his luck ran out.
Surprising MU’s offensive line by drifting backward rather than engaging a block, Suh leaped at the line and snatched Gabbert’s first-down throw — the All-American lineman’s fourth career interception.
“It was a read-and-react play,” Gabbert said. “And I didn’t read or react.”
MU Coach Gary Pinkel excused Gabbert for the interception, the first of his career, saying a lineman was supposed to cut-block Suh on the play.
“Kurtis sat back, and Suh dropped back,” said MU center Tim Barnes, referring to right guard Kurtis Gregory. “Afterward, Kurtis told me, ‘I should have attacked him, and I didn’t.’ It’s one of those plays where it just happens so quick.”
Taking over on MU’s 18-yard line with 13:44 left in the fourth quarter, Lee needed two plays to grab the lead for good. He found Paul again, this time for 13 yards on the go-ahead score. A failed 2-point conversion left Nebraska with a 13-12 lead.
On the next possession, an illegal-hands-to-the-face penalty on Suh moved the Tigers near midfield. But after opening the season with 136 consecutive passes without an interception, Gabbert threw another on his very next attempt, this time missing Jared Perry on a timing pattern, a throw picked off by Dejon Gomes and returned 40 yards to MU’s 10.
Shaking off a third-down blitz by linebacker Will Ebner, Lee found tight end Mike McNeill for an 8-yard touchdown, Nebraska’s third scoring pass in a span of 3:22.
The Tigers were down — 20-12 with 10:28 left — but not yet out. Gabbert guided the next drive down to Nebraska’s 22, but another penalty — holding on left guard Austin Wuebbels — was the night’s final costly meltdown. Four straight Gabbert passes fell incomplete, ending with a desperation fourth-and-20 try to Wes Kemp. Wuebbels’ penalty, his second for holding, gave MU eight flags for 100 yards.
Nebraska regained possession with 5:24 left and iced the victory with eight straight runs, the last a 5-yard touchdown dash by Roy Helu, capping a comeback not unlike the one the Huskers surrendered in their 16-15 loss at Virginia Tech last month.
“We talked about it at halftime,” Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini said. “We said before we walked out there on the field in the second half, we said, ‘We will not walk out of here without a win.’ And, you know, we just kept fighting.”
Facing the team he once pledged to join, Gabbert played MU’s last 14 possessions on a bum ankle, an injury that left him wearing a protective boot during his postgame interview. He said he didn’t consider coming out of the game.
“We didn’t score points when we needed to,” said Gabbert, who completed just 17 of 43 passes for 134 yards. “It starts with me up front. I’ve got to get the offense going. That didn’t happen tonight.”
Meanwhile, his counterpart did just that, as Lee emerged from his three-quarter funk and threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 14-of-33 passing.
With seven league games left to play, starting with next Saturday’s at No. 15 Oklahoma State, the Tigers fell a game back in the North standings and, perhaps most important, lost the head-to-head tiebreaker should they finish with the same league record as Nebraska, as they did last season when MU captured its second straight division title.
But a blown fourth quarter, not title talk, was the only topic on the Tigers’ minds as last night turned into this morning.
“That’s probably the most disappointing thing,” Gachkar said. “We love the fourth quarter. And we obviously didn’t do anything good for ourselves in the fourth quarter. That was definitely disheartening.”

Good game, Mizzou. Your defense played almost as well as ours. And I don't care what players say (Weather doesn't affect us), those pass completion percentages of both teams were cockadoodle crappy. But there's nothing like winning an ugly game; back to the way Nebraska used to win. Good luck to you and go huskers!

Mizzou fans, hold your head high. You held a 12-point lead going into the 4th quarter and had weathered a storm of what seemed to be everything the Huskers threw at your team. While many Husker fans (my brother included) were suggesting that Zac Lee be replaced by true freshman Cody Green, other fans were patiently waiting. For what I'm not sure, but mostly a sign of life from the offense as well as defense that was willing to catch the ball to create a turnover. In the span of three short minutes, we got our wish and then some.
This is one of those classic battles where the momentum ebbed and flowed and it eventually ended up in favor of the Huskers. However, I strongly believe that great things still await a talented Missouri squad, a force to be reckoned with for several years to come, regardless of whether Nebraska is back or not. Good luck against the rest of the Big 12 this year. I'm already looking forward to our battle in Lincoln next year.

Make no mistake, this game meant a lot to the Huskers as well as their fans. Therefore, it is certainly a lot easier to post following an important win. As such, I definitely respect any Mizzou fans and media who follow their team but who graciously offer their objective opinion about tonight's game in particular.
Definitely, I look forward to seeing how both teams respond in light of last night's outcome. I can see the Husker's momentum carrying over into next week's showdown with Texas Tech. Our ability to efffectively shutdown the run and provide above average coverage by our CBs has me overly optimistic about the outcome. However, I would say the same about Missouri's match up versus previous media-darling Okie State, especially with the Dez Bryan situation and injury issues at key skill positions. I also envision Gabbert providing them with difficulty in covering the talented receiving Tiger corps.

Great game!! How about drama - Gabbert the golden boy (decommit), the weather, Zac Lee in only his second road start.
I really thought Mizzou had us, but I knew that if NU got one touchdown we'd be right back in it. I just didn't think the momentum would shift so dramatically. We knew the blackshirts were back, but now we know Zac Lee has found confidence. If you have a fourth quarter like that at Faurot Field in those conditions you start believing that you can win anywhere against anyone.
My hats off to MU! I thought we would own them tonight, but in the end it came down to better execution (finally by the offense) in just a five minute period that changed the outcome. Of course the defense came out HUGE! Go Suh! go big red!

Nice comments, NU fans, appreciated. Not sure I agree with the best fans assessment all the time, but there is certainly a large chunk that is genuinely gracious and nice.
We'll see, hopefully what we saw was two good teams playing a pretty close game, and not two teams with real weaknesses trying to give the game to each other.
I will choose the former, good luck the rest of the way (unless it helps us win the North, in which case, please lose where necessary- thanks).

Huskerzone, you really think that Mizzou "outplayed" Nebraska??? Are you kidding? If you look at the penalties and passes that could have/should have been intercepted, we pretty much kept Mizzou in it. Throw in some horrible officiating (Suh's 2 bogus personal fouls come to mind) and this one shouldn't have even been close. If Lee completes a few more passes early and the running game got going, this was a blowout.
On to another subject. I appreciate how gracious Nebraska fans are and under most circumstances, with most other teams, I would be as well. But I have to say that Mizzou fans are some of the biggest trash talkers around and I was present the last time we played Mizzou in Columbia and remember being treated very poorly. So while not rubbing the loss in their face, I'll say I take great pleasure in this win and leave it at that.
Maybe after scanning some of these comments they'll get a clue about what it's like to win with class.

How freaking classy. Yes, we are terrible fans, so you show how great NU fans are by coming on and posting that c$%p. Being pompous, self-impressed, and whiny makes you a heck of a fan. Complaining that a close win wasn't a blowout because of penalties, extra classy!
I saw a great homefield crowd that was passionate and LOUD. You say you had a bad time last year- if you came to the game with the attitude you display, are you surprised? And part of any fanbase is going to be pr$%s to opposing fans of a hated rival after said rival just got spanked by your team.

kittykitty,
You said it all, you are terrible fans. I'll reiterate that under most circumstances, I wouldn't make it a point to rub it in a little.
I don't recall saying "last year" but rather the "last time we played in Columbia" since we played in Lincoln the year before. Meaning essentially, your so called "fans" had plenty of trash talking to do and we heard our share of obscenities in Columbia. While I won't go so far as to say that doesn't exist at Nebraska, it's more the acts of a few rather than the masses.
One writer said it best when referring to Mizzou as the nouveau rich (you can look that up in the dictionary if needed) and I put them on the same stage with the Kansas States and Colorados of the Big XII who win a few games against Nebraska after being dominated for years, and feel the need to trash talk. Again, it's about acting like you've been there before, winning like a champion. We'll see you next year in Lincoln.

I found it quite a musing when those oh-how-great-respectful-fans-we-are criticize MU fans for leaving the game before it is completed. How forgetful they are. Must be the corn mash. In 2007, most had left the stadium in the middle of the 3rd quarter. I looked to my right and saw all those empty seats previously occupied with the corn people. But, winning 4 of the last 6 isn't bad. And tagging NU with 51 points last year at their house is a wonderful memory. One game.

Huskerzone, we must have been watching two different games but at the very least from two different vantage points. Mizzou had pretty close to the same amount of yardage in penalties as Nebraska did. We had some poor special teams play that gave them 2 points on the safety and good field position when the ball hit (I believe it was) May's foot, and Prince slipping on coverage giving them the majority of their yardage in the first half on one long pass play and setting them up for a touchdown.
While they had more points at the end of the half, we certainly weren't being outplayed in my opinion.

I must comment on the fan behavior at home games. I brought my Mother to a game about 10 years ago and she was in her 70's, I think it was against Kansas. It bothered her a lot to hear the F word sprinkled about in every sentence. Maybe when you are in your twenties it is acceptable to not have the skills to complete a sentence without using that word but good luck with that after you grow up. My Mom never wanted to go back to Faurot. Mizzou lost a good fan because of a bunch of drunken punks. We are getting a reputation as having poor fans at games. That does not go well with having the facilities we have, the staff we have, and the recent successes. Just the opinion of another "mom".

OK, I read these posts all the time, for many seasons. I find them very amusing, that is the reason. I have never posted before, but this is a special event for me. You see Mizzou "fans" out do themselves when it come to Nebraska Football and being over the top with comments after going 4 and 2 vs NU over the last 6 years. Never mind the previous 50 years or so. With comments like "MU is the class of the North" / "NU Football is dead" / "Mizzou's Program is better than Nebraska's Program" (I especially like that one) / "Bo will need years to catch up Pinkel" / "Nebraska' defense could never keep up with the Mizzou skill players" and on and on and on... Like I said funny stuff indeed.
Anyway, at the risk of being classless, I am posting. This is not directed at those that appreciate college football in general, but those that run the smack above. I think it is great that Mizzou has a decent thing going, its good for the North.
I just want to let those smack talking Mizzou fans know beating you (smack talkers) made my weekend. Really, I will be smiling all weekend as I relish the thought of your heartburn. TJ, you really need to take fball 101 and learn what a cut block is. Spoon was retaliating, admitedly in poor judgement, to an attempted cut block to the knees. When you're an NFL bound player, such things have the potential to cost you millions. Some times you get tired of guys diving at your knees rather than taking you on up high. MU on the other hand was penalized for laying some high hits. While the Suh tackle on BG that twisted his ankle was completely legit. The skurs did dive at his lower legs several times. If it was Tom Brady there woulda been a flag. I know it's part of the game and usually unintentional but I hate to see those type of injuries happen to anyone.

Congrats to both our Tigers and the Huskers for playing a very tough game in horrible conditions. I also appreciate the classy post's by many of the Husker fans on this board. As usual we have many Husker "imposters" that are actually KU Beakers posting anti MU fan comments. The MU fan base is one of the best I have experienced in D1 sports. The students are the same here as they are anywhere. They are supportive of their team, they drink a little too much, and for those of us that are aging they may seem a tad obnoxious. Every D1 game has a few bad apples. but keep in mind that that leaves about 99% classy fans that treat our opponent fans well.
To the KU fans posting here as imposters: All of us in the Big 12 and outside the conference know you are a bunch of whiners. You complain about every fan base especially after you are soundly beaten on the field. Lew Perkins back allied KU into the Orange Bowl a few years ago utilizing the same tactics as the KU fan base. I am just glad we have fans like the Nebraska and Missouri fans representing the Big 12 North and treating others with class. Good luck Husker fans against KU, and we will do our best to thump them as well. Go Tigers!

Here comes Muddy and AJ and Meat with something clever to say. you know things like "Kittens", "Misery", "stay classy Columbia". Hey Mudman love the reference about the college girls and the whore thing...I bet you are quite the ladies man.
Hey silent...I'm laughing all weekend over how pathetic that your whole being is wrapped up in the results of college boys winning a football game.

This is what comes of cup cake schedules. God love Gabbert he's a tuff kid but he and the Tiger"s "O" line were obviously not prepared for the caliber of defense that Ndamukong Suh brought on. Suh tossed the Missouri's offensive line around like a bunch of rag dolls! 604 300 lbs and as fast as an F18 fighter jet!! But the schedule is not Alden's fault, it's all about the "Benjamins". Fill the seats, pay for the score board that didn't work and bring on Hickman High next year.

Please don't call me a loser. It hurts my feelings. I'm gonna go cry now. I learned it by watching that kid on your team crying when Roy Helu ran 40 yards to set up the 4th touchdown of the 4th quarter. Do you remember that part of the game? The "other 15 minutes"?
I think our receiver might have let out a little cry when "captain vagina" Witheredspoon punched him in the kidney. Punching people from behind...what a badass!!!

acpsteacher says...
We never outplayed the huskers, if we had we would have been up 35-0 after the 3rd quarter. We ran the same plays the entire game. They never worked--if there had been a better replay on the TD to end the half it would have been reversed. They were close to picking off the pass plays we ran for three quarters(a dink over the middle or an out), they just cheated the routes a little more in the 4th because they knew what was coming. Handing off 8 yards deep and gaining 1 yard is not gaining 9 yards. This sticking with the gameplan does not work. Nebraska saw we were jamming the box and went to the pass and kicked our asses. Our coaching decisions worked for a year or two-now everyone is on to us and an inflexible approach is not going to work.

kimrob14, stop trying to spin this game. The NU defense dropped more passes than MU receivers. Suh and co. dominated your O line. acpsteacher is right, everyone is on to the spread, or they will be after studying the game film. The striped shirts did everything to help MU out.......BG's touchdown run?? Suh's horsecollar tackle?? MU had a great few years and deserves credit, but to think we got lucky is acting like a JayHawk. Your above that I hope. Great game MU

YOU need to take football 101. Cut block to "Spoon" bad, could cost him millions. Cut block to Suh OK? Who is likely to go higher in draft? Who is likely to get bigger payoff, Suh could go as high as 1st pick, Spoon? - Not so much.
QUOTE (from article above): "MU Coach Gary Pinkel excused Gabbert for the interception, the first of his career, saying a lineman was supposed to cut-block Suh on the play."

On to bigger things. Great, great game. It's been almost two days and I'm still watching the highlights. Both teams did not capitalize on multiple opportunities. Losing close games sucks, and we've had our share. Our defense kept us in the game and deserves a huge thank you from the NU offense. I thought MU's defense played a great game too, just when i thought we were going to march down the field they shut the door.

Mosnowman, I can see how you might be confused. Your picture is clear evidence that you haven't completely evolved just yet. It takes time, a few million years but you'll get there. I guess by then Mizzou should be winning it's next football game against Nebraska and your fans can come out in full force and post your trash on the message boards again (at least for a while until we put you back in your place AGAIN).
As for KU (who is going to put another beating on MU), I can tell you that I'll definitely be rooting for them as I will every other team that plays against Mizzou this year. Your wonderful fans have pushed you past Colorado on my radar screen for classlessness. Congratulations! At least you've won something.

For you Gayhawks lurking here.....You are not looking too tough against the Sighclones. If they had a kicker, you'd be in real trouble.
As far as football... Everyone runs the spread now. Everyone defends it in practice all spring and fall. It has lost its edge. Defense is the trend coming back around in the Big 12. Offense is just part of the show.

Now instead of making asses of yourselves, congrats for surviving the game better and lets see what happens rest of year. Till NU, MU or KU beats the south teams it is all a bunch of nothing.
